Class started with exercises of continuous line drawings, then high contrast black and white drawings of the subject. In this case class had the examples to work from already in those formats.

They made their final color drawings from color photos showing a broader view of the scene. You can see the reference image here too.

One of the students asked to take a photo home. I refused, saying I would send it in email. But this one here should be big enough to save and print for reference.

It turned out a bit better than I thought. My data feed is spotty so some of that shows. Charlotte - did you happen to be there when I was doing it? I keep thinking I hear someone else saying a word here and there.

I wish the painting video had gone thru but that resulted in now having another version of the image!

September Harvests a Theme for Children's Drawing Classes at Rockland Library, 2017

Rockland - Children, and those young at heart, will explore farming, harvest, and seasonal themes in this September's ongoing drawing classes led by Catinka Knoth at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. The "Let's Draw Together!" sessions, geared for ages six and up, also welcome adults. The library requests that children age ten and under have an adult accompany them. Classes meet every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. in the Friends Community Room. FMI - Jean Young, children's librarian, 594-0310.

September subjects include butterflies and Monarch butterfly migration; farm scenes of haying and the fall harvest; farm animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, roosters, geese, and ducks; visits to the apple orchard and apple picking; and September gardens. Each week is a different subject.

Participants draw along with Knoth and experience drawing in a safe community environment. She expects students to be able to work independently for the most part. Wendy and Keith Wellin sponsor the children's workshops, which are free and open to the public, with all materials provided. The Friends of Rockland Library host.

Knoth Teaches "Scenes of September in Maine" Adult Art Workshops, at
Rockland Library, 2017

Rockland - Catinka Knoth  will  teach drawing  "Scenes of September in
Maine", with a focus on buildings, at 11 a.m.  Mondays,  Rockland Public
Library, the Community Room, 80 Union St.  Led by Knoth, participants
will make their own  drawings in color. Knoth offers the  adult workshops
free and  open to the general public, with materials supplied. Friends
of Rockland Library host. FMI Knoth at 691-5544 or Rockland Library at
594-0310.

Knoth will lead students in drawing several scenes of iconic local
Maine buildings. Students may experience simple aspects of  perspective
theory. They will also practice the technique of coloring in without
using outlines. Familiar buildings from St. George and South Thomaston
along the St. George peninsula and Rte 131 will be the subjects for the
classes. Each week is a different building - a barn, a grange, and a classic Maine farmhouse.

Rockland Breakwater & Friendship Sloop sailing past, and Maine birds - student art displays from adult and kids' art classes, 8/21-22/17

Adult class did some exercises with torn paper triangle arrangements to redraw in several ways. Mostly it was to practice seeing and drawing negative shapes/spaces. It is very important to practice creating white and light areas by working with the darker contrasting areas.

In the final drawings students used continuous line drawing first and then colored as they wished. The reference was a quickie painting I had done years ago at one of the annual Friendship Sloop races. There had only been time to draw quickly whatever I could capture. I did not then have a camera that would catch anything that far away. The lighthouse I could only ever draw through binoculars. Only later at home did I paint in the drawings. When boats are racing, this artist, who is not a sailor, must do plenty of guessing.

Maybe I will get to update further info later on! Do notice some of the blocks students were to practice before tackling the lighthouse drawing. In this case class followed along with me, while also having a barely visible reference photo at hand. It is an old instamatic photo I took of the lighthouse while taking the ferry to North Haven, (from Rockland).

The Maine farming shows blueberry harvest and belted Galloway cows. There is much more to farming than that but these are the two aspects I do every year.

Illustrating difference between watermark and credit line on images.

I made this w my phone's image edit markup features. The question had come up on Etsy. Having watermarks on your images is now frowned upon by the various search engines. (I agree.) But a credit line that does not obscure the essentials of the content is another matter, and I would say a must have. A watermark is usually somewhat transparent though, unlike my sample for which I only had white. Let us hope that my posting this 'watermarked' image I don't get penalized by google etc. Perhaps I'll just link to it... after a bit.


At this link, if it works, is a rough example showing a watermark vs. a credit line. Watermark would also be more transparent than the white I had to use. ... cannot make this a clickable link now, so copy/paste to use it.
