2/10 Chinese New Year Season - Year of the Sheep, Ram, Goat, starts
2/17 Mardi Gras masks,
2/24 Presidents
Sponsored by Wendy and Keith Wellin, the workshops, for age 6 and up,
are free and open to the public, with all materials provided. Knoth
expects participants to be able to work independently for the most
part. Children age 10 and under should be accompanied by an adult.
Ongoing workshops meet every Tuesday, 4-5 pm, Community Room, Rockland
Public Library, 80 Union St., hosted by Friends of Rockland Library.
FMI - Jean Young, children's librarian, 594-0310.
Young artists will draw a wide range of motifs. Valentine's Day cards often have motifs such as hearts, birds, cupids, lace, ribbons, and roses. Chinese New Year 2015, which starts 2/19, is celebrated for 15 days. It is the Year of the Sheep. Participants may explore traditional papercut designs, Chinese dragons, and Lion Dancers. Mardi Gras motifs include masks, King cakes, doubloons, jazz instruments, jester, tricorn hat, and beads. In honor of the presidents, students will explore classic presidential portraits.

Penguins, snowmen, pandas, people - student art, (kids & adult), children's drawing class, 1/13/15. Circles and teardrop shapes cut freehand from black colored and white paper and arranged to make winter characters.
Watercolors after Winslow Homer's "Sunset Fires", 1/13/15
You can see Homer's watercolor, "Sunset Fires", here.
It is a great model for playing with washes, and overpainting the silhouettes when the washes dry. Next time I will practice the schooner separately!

Sports figures & penguins - student art, adult drawing class, 1/12/15.
Exercises A) take a quarter sheet of paper. Color it with black crayon. Cut out circles the size of quarters freehand. Cut out at least eight teardrop shapes in about two sizes. Arrange a circle shape and four teardrop shapes to create a figure on a quarter sheet of paper. Draw that figure on another quarter piece of paper. Do this by coloring in without using outlines. B) On a half sheet of paper arrange two figures with these pre-cut shapes. Draw this arrangement on a separate half sheet of paper. Keep using the coloring in with no outlines method.

C) On a quarter sheet arrange a circle and four teardrops to be something like a sports figure. Recreate it in drawing on a separate quarter sheet of paper. Keep using the color in without outlines method. D) try an arrangement of two sports figures using the pre-cut shapes on a half sheet of paper. Re-create the arrangement on a separate half sheet of paper using the coloring in method with no outlines.
Final practice: try for an abstracted penguin-like creature using these shapes but going for the drawing right off the bat, coloring it in, no outlines.
Final drawing: draw a penguin or a group of penguins, from reference pictures, abstracting where you can. Use what you got from the practice, but do as you wish!

Evergreens in snow - student drawings & exercises, adult art class, 1/05/15
Evergreen trees in winter - student art, adult drawing class, 01/05/15. Exercise: blind contour drawing. Papercut exercises: Color one half of a piece of paper with a dark color. Fold in half. Cut out generic or schematic shapes for snow. Attach the colored papercut to the blank half of paper. Make another - change the snow shapes; make them a bit more organic. Now make a colored drawing of one of these dark paper cuts. You color in without doing any outlining though you can create edges. Final drawing: draw a border around the paper. Hold the paper vertical. Do a continuous line drawing of a an evergreen in snow from the reference photo. Color it in with a few colors using what you did in the exercises.
