Hong Kong digital virtual travel sketches from a virtual visit by #virtualsketchleicester, for 4/4/21
Digital drawings of Hong Kong. Reference images provided by organizers of the virtual travel visit, #virtualsketchleicester. This group sets up events for participants to spend several days drawing/sketching from the various reference materials provided. There is an event date where people can meet online in a zoom meeting. Share there creations, and experiences.
When I first tried it a few weeks ago, I immediately thought, ‘No, I don’t want to be doing this anymore!’ But then it became a kind of challenge to see if I could do it quickly. I’ve only been using digital drawing so far. Ipad and ipencil. But it’s also been fun working from split screen viewing. It can be a nuisance to set up the ipad to do this though.
My ‘notes’ app is open full screen. Then I pull up the photos app to share the screen with my drawing area. It’s always tricky to
a) get them sharing the screen, and then
b) position in my preferred arrangement. (There are only two choices)
In the Hong Kong views I made some screen shots from some of the videos in the reference files. These are much more glamorous and highly produced videos than the reference photos. Hong Kong looks to me like it’s all Times Square!
Join the Facebook group if these sound like fun projects to participate in. I’m assuming they started for the pandemic. Lots of people prefer to be working on location. This is a fun way to armchair travel!
And now there are actually some other scenes I want to try just because I see others doing them. The photos look like a horrid place, but the art transcends, even in the clumsiest hands. When you see a photo translated into a drawing, you can feel that it’s gone thru another humans being or soul, even just a little bit....

Reading Puppy naps on its book, and other drawings from virtual Sip & Sketch Session #50, 3/26/21
Reading Puppy naps on its book, and other drawings from virtual Sip & Sketch Session #50, 3/26/21
Remembered in random order;
- Four pigs in a row
- Grape hyacinths bouquet
- Face overlaid with some framing or strange ribbing structure
- Woman in a doorway with the bouquet wearing a green skirt white shirt and the bouquet of white flowers covering her face
- Woman in swirling gold yellow dress and blonde gold hair
- Pair of spiffy shoes oxford, laced together
- Puppy sleeping over an open book, wearing reading glasses
- New modern architecture of a pod like house. Maybe from the 60s but also may be from that rock album cover artist Roger Dean. I think he designed pod houses and spacious spaces too.
Sorry I can’t upload the missing drawings. I can’t see what I’m looking for or the editor just picks all the images... somewhere I did those shoes and a more developed puppy drawing. This one was basically from memory because I was late to the session.
No wonder I could not find it. There’s a huge gap in the middle - nothing really shows in the thumbnail.
