Chinese paper cuts dogs class for Chinese New Year of the Dog - 2018

We somewhat followed these steps:

Cut sheet of paper into quarters

Color two of them with two different red crayons

On the back of one of these red papers draw a simple dog figure

Lay red paper face down, (red), on top of a white paper, blank paper, ( quarter sheets).

Draw a simple dog outline on the top sheet which is the white sheet and press hard as you do.

Place a red sheet on top of a white sheet, parentheses quarter sheet parentheses, red sheet red side should be against the white/blank

Draw a simple dog outline pressing hard with your pencil.

Take a peek, you should have a red line drawing on the blank sheet.

Cut out your first dog drawing in one cut, no trimming. You should have two pieces space –  the dog, and the background,.

Experiment - The sheet where are you drew hard for a transfer drawing, feel with your fingertip to see if you can feel your drawing.

If you cannot, draw another one pressing hard enough so that you can feel it on the other side.

Turn it over, raised line up.

Place another blank quarter sheet on top.

Do a light pencil rubbing to see if your line drawing will reveal itself. We tried it in crayon. Maybe pencil will work better.

Try a crayon rubbing, with a red crayon, and use your paper cut dog.

Take another quarter sheet of red colored paper and cut a simple dog figure freehand, no drawing underneath.

Now, using a simple Chinese paper cut as a reference, where you can see the cut out pattern designs, see how you can create a simplified version of some of the design patterns in a new red paper cut. Since you are using scissors and not a knife, see if you can do this in one continuous line/cut. You should end up with two pieces – the dog and the background.

Some of your white backgrounds can be placed over red papers, (red colored paper). Tip one down on top of a red paper.

Tip a red dog cut out onto a blank quarter sheet.

Through all of this keep making colored quarter sheets as needed!

Arrangement options:

Dogs, dog figures, quarter sheets, onto a whole sheet.

One long accordion series,

Bind together

Join together using little strips of blank paper and glue on the back of adjoining panels. Make this accordion pamphlet/booklet/card/series as long as you like.

Attach your paper cut cards onto a long string like a banner.

March adult art programs with Catinka Knoth at Rockland Library, 2018

"March Motifs" Adult Art Workshop Series with Catinka Knoth at

Rockland Public Library, 2018

Rockland - Catinka Knoth  will lead an art workshop series for adults,

on creating art around March Motifs. Participants will visit themes

such as the Iditarod dog sled races; celtic designs and greens for St. Patrick's Day; the 'Circus Comes to Town'; and Spring and Easter. Each week will be a different subject. Classes meet 11 a.m. on Mondays,  in

the Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St.  Led by

Knoth, participants will  create their own art. Knoth provides the

classes free of charge, with materials supplied. Friends of Rockland

Library host the workshops, which are open to the public. FMI Knoth at

Knoth provides instruction and guidance in drawing and creating

March motifs. Participants will work with pencil, colored pencil,

crayon, and papercutting, with a focus on drawing in color.

Knoth paints watercolors of Maine and whimsical animal scenes, which

she offers as cards and prints. She also teaches a free weekly children's

drawing class at Rockland Public Library, sponsored by Wendy

"Let's Draw A March Medley!" - Children's Drawing Workshops at Rockland

Public Library, 2018

Rockland - This March, children will draw the Iditarod Dog Sled Races,

St. Patrick's Day, Spring, Easter and the circus, at Rockland Public Library's ongoing children's drawing workshops led by Rockland artist Catinka Knoth.

Participants follow along with Knoth as she demonstrates creating a

variety of subjects for March. Husky dogs, mushers and dog sled teams,

are motifs from the Iditarod Race in Alaska. The class may also

experiment with papercuts of dog teams.  St. Patrick's Day has it's

shamrocks, St. Patrick, leprechauns, pots of gold, rainbows,  and Celtic

designs. The first day of Spring in 2018 is March 20th,  Traditionally March was when 'the circus comes to town', bringing acrobats, animals, clowns, and tents.

Local patrons, Wendy and Keith Wellin, provide the workshops free and open to the public, with all materials provided. The workshops, for ages 6 and up as well as the young at heart, offer the opportunity to make art together. Children age 10 and under need adult accompaniment. Knoth expects participants to be able to work independently for the most part. Ongoing workshops meet every Tuesday, 4-5 pm., Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St., hosted by Friends of Rockland Library. FMI - Jean Young, children's librarian, 594-0310.

Happy Valentine's Day - papercut swans

Mardi Gras masks, student display, adult drawing class, 2/12/18

We started with drawing rows of pattern marks & shapes as a warm up. Then we made paper templates - fold half sheet of light weight paper in half. Draw a half mask shape with an eye hole, (which should be about 1/2" in from the fold. You can also just cut this directly. Then cut out the template. Open it and use it to trace around on cardstock. Two masks fit on a sheet. You can make an arrangement on your paper or cut them out as real masks. Decorate before you cut the mask out.

Purple, green, and gold are the traditional Mardi Gras colors.

Valentine's, roses, swans, cards from adult drawing class, 2/5/18

We started by drawing roses using pieces of various red crayons. Hold them flat against the paper and make curling curving twisting strokes.

The kissing swans we drew freehand onto a paper folded in half. Make sure the beak is on the fold. The neck forms the heart. Tip this papercut onto a red background.
