Daisies coastal floral scene with Marshall Pt. Lighthouse - student art display, adult art class, 7/31/17

This was a complete follow-along drawing because the lighthouse reference photos were not on hand. We did several exercises before the scene practicing variations of working with negative shapes. Everyone was so accommodating working from demonstrations drawn the same size as the work they did. Hard to see at that scale. I hope the person who left their art behind will pick it up next week, or advise whether to leave it at the circ desk.

Maine Lighthouses and Boats" Adult Art Workshop Series in August at Rockland Library, 2017

Press Release:
Knoth Offers Free "Maine Lighthouses and Boats" Adult Art Workshop
Series in August at Rockland Library, 2017

Rockland - Catinka Knoth will teach drawing Midcoast Maine lighthouse
and boat scenes, most Mondays in August at 11 am. in the Community Room,
Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Led by Knoth, participants make
their own lighthouse and boat drawings using colored pencils and
crayons. Each week is a different scene:

8/07 Marshall Point Light
8/14 Rockland Breakwater
8/21 Sailboats by Rockland Breakwater
8/28 Lobsterboat heads home by Marshall Pt.

Knoth offers the workshops free of charge with materials supplied.
The adult workshops are hosted by Friends of Rockland Library and open to the
general public. FMI Knoth at info@catinkacards.com or Rockland Library at 594-0310.

Participants will learn in the first session how to make a drawing of
Marshall Point Light. Knoth will show how to depict the white forms of
the tower, the pylons, and the walkway, by making the "negative"
shapes of the deep blue sea that shows behind these objects. The dark
turret and cap of the building will appear with the use of minimal
strokes. Broad swaths of crayon marks and accent strokes will suggest
the rocky shoreline. The dark green of Hupper's Island in the
background provides further negative shapes to define the walkway.
This is a subject that needs no preliminary drawing.

Knoth paints watercolors of Maine and whimsical animal scenes, which
she offers as cards and prints. She teaches a free weekly children's
drawing class, sponsored by Wendy and Keith Wellin, at Rockland Public
Library. For more information about Knoth's work visit

How to annotate pics in iPhone iOS 10.3

Mark up w text and drawing is in email. (On messages too?)

Write text, change fonts And text size too. Also color of text.

In this case I had to resend the pic just to get it to annotate.

In notes here I can also start a drawing.

Poppies coastal floral landscapes and local landmarks - lobster sculpture and Talbot House, Rockland. Student art by adults and kids in art classes, 7/17 - 18/17

The poppies landscape drawings were from my long ago instamatic photo. We preceded with a series of exercises, shown here too. Would love to find a good photo of that lobster sculpture. I suspect we worked from that of a town 40 miles south of here. If anyone would like to share their photo of it, post it to my facebook artist page - would be lovely to have... here is good too, but not sure it is possible!

Favorite Maine Cat & Dog characters, Lupine scenes, 4th of July scenes, red white n blues student art displays - early summer 2017

Kids' class today did 'favorite Maine cats & dogs'  working from some Maine children's books - such as Nellie the lighthouse dog, (in this case it was Nellie the flight instructor) and Togus the Cat. The illustrator of Togus the Cat was a well loved local art teacher, Thomas Block, who just passed away. His teaching had a strong influence on the lives of quite a few people around here over the years.

Nellie the dog was artist Bob Ensor's - she was known around the Marshall Pt. Lighthouse because they lived around there and went on many walks there. A friend wrote a story about her. Bob made the drawings. Then came the story of Nellie as a flight instructor, (actually flying instructor). Togus the cat is another well loved and real animal character of Maine.

Adult art class did lupine practices and drawings yesterday. Next time we will have to get some extra inspiration from the story of Mrs. Rumphias and the lupine. Students had to invent 10 samples of possible markings/scribbles/strokes for conveying lupine stalks. One of these was to include their name as the flower stalk.

Adult class had done Red White and Blues for the 4th of July - drawings of bluebirds and strawberries, even though bluebirds would rather eat mealworms and insects than berries.

In kids' class for the 4th of July we did parade and fireworks scenes.
