"Let's Draw Jubilant June!" - Children's Drawing Workshops at Rockland
Public Library, 2017

Rockland - Children will explore 'early summer' themes for this
month's children's drawing classes led by Catinka Knoth at Rockland
Public Library. June provides subjects such as summer
activities and seashore scenes; Father's Day cards; floral scenes with
poppies, roses, lilacs, and lupine; and 4th of July celebrations.
Students follow along with Knoth as she demonstrates drawing a variety
of motifs. Knoth gears the classes for age 6 and up, including the
young at heart. She expects participants to be able to work
independently for the most part. Children age 10 and under need adult
accompaniment, according to Library policy.

Wendy and Keith Wellin sponsor the workshops, which are free and open
to the public, with all materials provided. The ongoing classes meet

"Birds, Blooms, & Berries" - June Adult Art Classes with Catinka Knoth,
at Rockland Public
Library, 2017


Rockland - Local artist Catinka Knoth will lead a series of free drawing
classes for adults on creating birds and floral or berry motif art and
cards, at Rockland Public Library. Classes meet at 11am, Mondays in
June, 80 Union St, in the Friends Community Room. Participants will
create art using pencils, colored pencils, crayons, and sometimes
scissors, with
an emphasis on drawing in color. Students do warm-up practices before
working on final drawings. Each week is a different bird and plant
combination - birds such as hummingbirds, cedar waxwings,
and cardinals. Knoth will give instruction and guidance.
She invites students of all levels to come make art in this communal
and diverse environment.

Knoth provides the classes free of charge, with materials supplied.
Friends of Rockland Library host the workshops, which are open to the

Knoth paints watercolors of Maine, and whimsical animal scenes, which
she offers as cards and prints. She also teaches a free weekly
children's drawing class at Rockland Public Library, sponsored by Wendy

Drawing American Flag students' art displays, kids and adult classes, 5/22-23/17; and How to draw video

In adult art class, drawing the American Flag,  we did some practice on other ways to depict stars in the canton first. Draw circles and carve out the dark areas to convey the white star figures. We did not draw the stars in the usual line drawing star method. We also did a half sheet practice to get the proportion of the canton, (blue rectangle of starts), and the stripes.

The stars should be 6 across then 5 across continuing until there are 9 rows in all. That equals fifty stars for fifty states. One way to convey this without being detailed, is to draw blue criss-cross lines. That is good for small flags.

Red and white stripes, 13 in all for the original 13 colonies: Seven red and six white. Top edge is a red stripe, as is the bottom edge. Four red stripes off the canton and the three below that area. The hard part is to asses freehand how wide the red stripes off the canton are. Probably  would all be easier if one were measuring!

Happy Mother's Day!

Broken crayon drawing card to wish you the best!

Mother's Day cards and lilyponds with frogs, cranes, and a touch of perspective, student work, kids and adult drawing classes, 5/8-9/17

How to practice perspective without really doing so?! In adult class we tried to draw a tiled ground in perspective. We did not use measuring and proper rules. All just approximating... In the tiles we drew ovals of gradating sizes. These were the lilypads which in real nature would not line up that way. Then we placed frogs in the foreground and tried to draw some egrets in the scene. Coloring as desired after that.

The kids' class made up their Mother's Day card as they wished. Remember if you draw on a card and happen to draw on the back side instead of the front - just cut it out and glue it to a new card. Or make it a loaded card with a new picture on the other side. Or turn it into the inside of the card and add a new image to the front. Lots of ways to go!

 

 

Testing 'Etsy mini' and musings over changes at Etsy...

Testing whether I can make the etsy mini widget so that it lacks the link to the site in general. I have stripped that out, but I think it will either not work at all, or it will auto add it somehow. Etsy is doing away with this widget for new versions. If one already has it, it will stay....Supposedly. Changes are coming at E. One of the shareholders, a hedge fund that owns 2% of E stock, has written an article that has been in the news. CEO had to step down and the company had to lay of 8% of their work force (80 people). All this while the company has been moving into new digs apparently. And back in the forums for the past year there have been back and forth postings and speculations about huge drops in business by some and alternately good sales for others. And frequent changes that keep turning things topsy-turvy and keep people on their toes. All in all, an interesting(?) or curious side drama!


So, now let's see if it works after I have added the general site link back in. So far nothing is showing.. ok.. it does not show in the editor but shows once posted. I will try both ways now.

May flowers and baskets drawn with broken crayons, student drawings, kids and adult classes 5/1&2/17

We did warm-up practice sheets using two random pick colored pencils taped together so that one pencil sticks out a bit beyond the other. This gives practice in seeing what strokes a flat edge tool makes.

Then we drew in a similar way using a broken crayon, peeled and  flat against the paper. One can make fat and thin strokes and strokes that change widths depending on their angle against the paper. After trying the May basket drawing in one color we made another drawing with several colors.

The lesson was the same for both classes.
