Durham, England virtual travel sketching! 3/28/21

A couple of my ‘virtual travel sketches’ of Durham England. #virtualsketchleicester #Durham (UK)

(Hosted by Pete Sketches, of #virtualsketchleicester.)

Several groups in Facebook have been hosting online travel sketch sessions. I’m not sure if it started with the pandemic - maybe some were already doing it. Not everyone can afford the real globetrotting, either in time or money. And not everyone wants to!

With this group, hosts put together a collection of photos and informative links for a location. They set up a gathering date for participants to meet on zoom to share work and meet. People also post  their drawings/sketches/art to the group page.

I’ve done a couple of Durham England sketches. I think google pics were the ref pics.

I’m drawing these with ipencil in ipad. Horrid stuff to work with. I can’t understand why people like it so much. I like it’s strong blacks tho, and a certain convenience. It’s frequently trying to turn lines into arrows. And the surface is so slippery that there is not enough line control. I’ll be damned if I start using the ruler now...

Triangle circus figures and animals

We do this lesson, or some version of it, every year. The Circus  used to come to town in March. But they’ve all been shutting down. Cirque de Soleil went bankrupt during the pandemic, summer of 2020.

I’ll keep the story going awhile longer. As a kid I loved movie/story Toby Tyler..

Here’s how you can easily draw up some clowns and acrobats and circus animals. This is actually from an older post I did, but it’s the basic lesson. You can use my Demo drawings but so much more fun to invent your own.

“A Circuses of triangle figures - acrobats, clowns, animals. Art lesson demo drawings,  3/28/16 3/29/16

Cut a sheet of card stock into quarters.

Invent  an acrobat or clown figure in each piece of card stock, (vertical format), by just drawing triangles. Make sure the joints have width rather than two points touching.

Invent four animals by drawing triangles on card stock quarters in horizontal format.

Color and/or decorate these figures.

Cut them out.

Arrange them on a separate sheet of paper. Tip them down with a few strategic spots of glue stick. Color/embellish the scene further.

Alternately, attach paper sticks to the back of the cutouts and hang off accordion fold backdrop.”

Black rose and faces busting out of spheres, my drawings from virtual Sip & Sketch Session #49, 3/19/21

Black rose and faces busting out of spheres, my drawings from virtual Sip & Sketch Session #49, 3/19/21

Im writing this so late that I really can’t remember what we did. I left so early because I could not concentrate. The host sent me the image deck right away, so I could continue working.

Let’s see what I can remember. Memories return if you just start with anything you remember. In random order...

  1. A leaf skeleton
  2. A pile of  spheres with strange facial expressions coming out of them in relief.
  3. Fashion model in black gown and swooping black hat or headdress. Shiaparelli?
  4. Black rose, or cabbage photographed in black and white.
  5. Contemplative chimpanzee scratching side of its face thoughtfully.
  6. A face of surprise with wide open mouth
  7. Leopard cub or kitten - unusual pattern I think
And, after having another look at the images
  1. Suited seated figure holding a large bunch of balloons
  2. Indian elephant god sculpture
  3. Narrow street corner in Europe
  4. Relief sculpture of two robed figures - Hellenic heads/dress/style...this may have been from previous session ....

Thank you to hosts Lisa Jordan and Cindi Taylor for curating and holding these weekly online, (Zoom), drawing sessions. They started when the pandemic hit, as a way to gather and share and engage in soul enriching activity in community. The one year anniversary for the sessions is coming right up.

Happy Birthday! Clown juggler stick puppet sings ..IMG 9153

Seems like my video got dark once it uploaded to YouTube. Let’s hope I can remember whatever I learned while making this. But where is the actual video? This is looking blank. I had uploaded a separate frame to use as the thumbnail, but it came up upside down ...

Here is a clown drawing you can download, print, color and make your own puppet with.

Draw 100 people one week challenge, 3/14/21

I knew it started on 3/8/21, but did not realize it ended 5 days later. Just assumed that was an error. One week usually means 7 days! So at least I got them done. Most of the people are inventions. With the time squeeze I had to use the fastest way I could find. Interesting is that as one scribbles or draws one sees various figures emerging on their own and morphing into different positions like looking to the clouds. Like shapeshifters.

This first person in the strip is made up by writing a sentence or two or three to form a face of sorts!

On the day  of the class this host makes an FB post about the previous session. It often shows the reference pic and the drawings everyone does. It's in zoom so it's just a screen shot of everyone around the screen holding up their work  each time. It gives you an idea if you want to do it. There is no instruction. The 'poses' are timed. The sessions are free.  But you have to ask for the invite/link.

Husky sled dog to draw and color, 3/2/21

The Iditarod dog sled race will be starting soon. I drew a quickie version in my phone. I used a stylus instead of my finger. IPencil does not work on a phone. Stylus is big fat and gushy. You can’t see just where it’s drawing.

I hope you can download, print, and color from this. Or cut several of them out to make a dogsled team!
