Penguins & sports figures, black n white! Student art display, adult drawing class, 1/30/17

Exercises with black circle and teardrop paper cuts, create an arrangement on a quarter sheet of paper, draw that arrangement on another sheet by coloring in, don't use outlines. Can you find a figure in your drawing? Or what do you see in your arrangement? Now make some arrangement where you intend to draw to make a figure. Do another one. Are you beginning to see the connection to sports figures graphics and penguins? Final drawings on a larger sheet work from reference pictures of penguins to make a a penguin scene drawing using some of what you worked with in the exercises.

More specifically for the exercises, (repeating from my FB comments):
The fun of it was also in the exercises. I asked class to color up 2 quarter sheets using black crayon. Freehand cut a couple circles, several elongated teardrop shapes of varying sizes. Make an arrangement on a blank quarter sheet using several shapes. Draw this arrangement on other blank quarter sheet. Look at your drawings and see if you can find a figure or whatever in them. Now try to make an arrangement that is somewhat like an action sports figure, preferably winter sport. This will be quite abstracted. Now see what kind of penguins you can make from your shapes, (and draw). None of these drawings should use outlines. They should be done by coloring out/up/in(?) the shapes.

Snow scene, students, adult art class 1/23/17

We started with a couple exercises - you can see a few examples along the bottom.
a) Continuous line drawing of the reference photo, working with a crayon.
b) Color in the blue shapes:blue sky, blue snow areas. Color in the dark areas: tree trunk, branches, darks in the barn, roof edges. No outlines when you do this. Whites stay white. Are you seeing the white snow appear on the branches? When you draw, look for creatures in the negative shapes, or even in the lines. You don't have the reference photo for this, so you will have to take my word that some of the creatures I saw were: bison head, greyhound, old fashioned ladies shoe, eagle, crow. Class was very skeptical of my findings, until I made a map with labels on each finding! They conceded to most - except the buffalo head.

For the final drawing they were to employ the two exercises together if they were so inclined. And, of course draw it bigger. Just changing the scale of the drawing is a big challenge!

Penguins - student work by kids and adults, children's art classes, 1/17/17

Penguins live in the Southern hemisphere, and not only in winter climates. Just in places where they don't need to fly. One of the students' favorite penguins is the 'African penguin'. We shall have to look that one up. Here we have art from 4 years old to grandparent age!

Snowflake papercuts, New Year, and December holidays art from children's classes, both kids & adult work,12/20/16 - 1/3/17

The trouble with those papercut snowflakes is that kids hands are not big or strong enough to cut through the folds needed for the best overall snowflake shape. We tried an experiment. We folded the paper into a quarterfold, but then drew in a makeshift extra starpoint. We cut around the overall shape pattern. Once we had the basic flake shape, we did the little cut away triangles and diamonds or whatever we wanted. And then to open the surprise snowflake. We colored up background sheets in any way we wanted. One child made an entirely different drawing of two creatures, visible when the snowflake gets lifted. Another child used the initials I had given as
a model to write initials from as something to paste onto the artwork. This meant another child wanted to hang up initials from me but not on the work. "No, you may not!", I said. I had not made the connection of why the child wanted the initials. "My work does not go there." I said, not realizing it was already there on the other child's work. Oh, the unintended unfairnesses of life.
