A four year old learning to hold and master scissors so it actually cuts and drawing triangles, (can you remember trying to form the peak of an A as a very young child - almost impossible at that age), worked so hard and came away filled with glee.

An eight year old avid artist turned the family's triangle trees into a larger tree farm by gluing them onto a two page spread.

A ten year old lover of drawing figured out most of the confusing aspects of turning a symmetrical tree papercut into a folding card and then got to work teaching the adult!

They also all managed to turn their so called 'mistakes' into something else. There was not enough room or time to put up all the art they all made. And they had made it all practically in silence from almost silent demonstration and gestures. Then bang, bang, bang - up on the wall for the group art display.

Repost to turn the image format to horizontal. Printed out nice on full page for me at least. Digital drawing in a tablet app. I do it but hate drawing on a tablet with the gushy fat tipped 'pen'. Always forget the name - stylus- of these things.... Seems smaller this way?

Paper house tracer/template sketch

I sketched this out before the gingerbread house drawing class. It is not done with rulers. I made measurements by pinching the paper. You get the idea and can see what you might like to change. Decorate as you want before you cut it out. It probably works better on card stock, but it is small enough to work with copy paper. I put slits along the tabs in this first cut-out. This light weight paper does not work well with the slit join. Card stock would probably work well with a slit join. Otherwise just glue or tape those tabs together, on the inside would be nice. The roof needs to be fastened down from inside with tape, or glue a strip of paper across the join on the inside. If you want an overhang, fold a little edge on each side. There may not be enough excess for an overhang. This is by no means an exact plan, but it is good enough to make something with

Holiday cards calligraphy style, gingerbread house drawings, student drawings, adult and kids' art classes, 12/5&6/16

In adult class we did some calligraphy/script style marks practice before using these marks to make Christmas trees, wreathes, and other motifs. We used two colored pencils taped together to create an interesting double line.
Kids class we made a variety of marks in the border area of our papers. Students followed along with me. They tried to guess what the marks might 'be', but I managed to keep mum. It is fun to hear the kids try to guess why something is going on. It is also interesting to simply let them keep wondering and THINKING and watch how well they work things out for themselves.
We raced through at the end in tracing from a pattern that they at least got to color as a gingerbread house. They would have to wait til they got home to cut it out and put this together as a little paper house model or object, (rather than just a flat drawing). You see the beginnings of one in the display.
The pattern should have two longer oblong panels and two ends panels that include the roof peaks. My pattern has the wall panels all in one row. One could add the opposite wall to the roof section instead. The roof is formed by the two oblong panes jutting out between the peak ends. The pattern includes tabs for gluing. I say this because the cut out model on display here may be missing one of the long walls/panels.
I will try to add some version of the pattern here for people to make their own paper gingerbread house models.

Native American Heritage Month - patchwork designs, kids class, 11/29/16

Folded paper squares let us create lots of 'patchwork' style designs. We scribbled up some rough pencil graphs first just to play with grid/cell drawing. The little four year old played along fairly willingly! It seems this also looks a bit like Minecraft, a game I knew little about. Now I know a little bit about it. 'Mine' is not a possessive, it refers to 'mining'.

This display shows both kids and adult.

Patchwork squares drawings & colorings, and exercises, adult art class, 11/28/16

Exercises were to draw a series of graphs: 8 x 8, 6 x 6, 7 x 7, and 7 x 7. The 7 x 7 would give central axes. Color in one color designs for the 8 x 8 and the 6 x 6. Make two color designs in the 7 x 7's.

For the big designs:

Fold up a sheet of letter paper so that you make a square out of it. I assume you know how to do that? (Fold the short side onto the long side. That should give you two equal sides with some excess. Trim off the excess. You will be left with a square sheet of paper.) Fold the square into 16 squares. Color a one color design using the squares from your folding.

New sheet: Fold into seven equal panels that will be equal or less then the square you can get out of that sheet. Make seven panels the other way so that you will have a 7 squares x 7 squares square. We used a fan fold or an accordian fold in order to get our seven equal parts. It is not as precise as measuring but we were working on the fly.) Now you will have a square that has  two central axes. Color a design using two colors.

Turkeys student art display, kids & adults, children's drawing class, 11/22/16

We did the calligraphy flourish type of turkey drawings, and then the horn of plenty cornucopia. And, the magic trick of making a patch of carbon/transfer paper. In this case it was a big guessing game to find out how to make marks appear on the back of the paper. I need this trick every once in a while when I want to reverse an image and have no light box. That strip of heart, box, circle, heart, box is a result of the experiment.

A little turkey fun!

Those snacky-poo turkeys people make look like such fun, I had to try a mini one. A way to have turkey without eating turkey!

Riot of colors because they did not get to work from photos! We practiced calligraphy loops using crayons first. Then class followed along from my demo on the whiteboard. Time to color in the drawing! Who needs coloring pages. This is 'make your own' coloring pages. Next version class followed along with my stencil style drawing. They were to draw in yellow or orange. And then color it. Turkeys ran off the page. Just tape another paper on and keep drawing.

Rockland - Children will explore motifs from the traditional
celebrations of December in the free drawing classes at Rockland Public Library led by Catinka Knoth. Classes meet every Tuesday, 4-5pm, in the Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Children 10 and under need adult accompaniment. The program, sponsored by Wendy & Keith Wellin, is free with all materials supplied, and hosted by Friends of Rockland Library. Contact Jean Young, children's librarian, at 594-0310 for more information.
 
Christmas, Winter solstice, Chanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the New Year offer lots of imagery for creative fun. Students will create images such as holiday wreaths, trees, gingerbread houses, ornaments and decorations; Santa Claus, toys, & elves; reindeer and sleighs; gift giving and more.

Class often starts with a period of guessing and brainstorming ideas
for the session's drawing. Knoth then leads children age 6 and up in "follow along" drawings.  She expects children to work independently and encourages adults to participate by making their own drawings. If time allows, Knoth takes group photos of the students' work at the end of class.

Rockland - Catinka Knoth will  lead an art workshop series for adults,
on drawing and making holiday cards, scenes, and ornaments,  11 a.m., most Mondays, December 5-19, (no class 12/26) in the Community Room, Rockland
Public Library, 80 Union St.  Led by Knoth, participants will  create
their own art for the holidays. Knoth provides the  classes  free of
charge, with materials supplied. Friends of Rockland Library host the
workshops, which are open to the public. FMI Knoth at 691-5544 or

Knoth will provide instruction and guidance in drawing and creating
December's holiday  themes. Participants will work with colored pencil,
crayon, and paper cutting, with a focus on drawing in color.
 
Knoth paints watercolors of Maine and whimsical animal scenes, which
she offers as cards and prints. She teaches a free weekly children's
drawing class at Rockland Public Library, sponsored by Wendy and Keith

Woodland animals - mice, chipmunks, squirrels, foxes, raccoons, bears. Student drawings, kids' & adult art classes, 11/8 & 11/14, 2016

Kids' class, (of kids and adults) drew along with my demonstration, always eager to get to their coloring. You can see they have made sure to give them plenty of berry good food. The adult class we did four follow along exercises. A chipmunk as if it were made of rectangular sponges. A bear as if made of eggs, (yarn balls or pompoms next time), the fox and coon as my somewhat cartoon like interpretations. Final drawings used reference photos from my close encounters with squirrels and chipmunks.
