St. George Grange - student drawing adult art class, 9/28/15. practice 1) drawing straight parallel lines in a variety of ways, including standing vs. sitting!
2) draw front face plane of the building by
a) outline then colored in.
b) colored into imaginary outlne w/out outline. Use light blue crayon
3) draw side of building w white crayon in both
a) outline colored in
b) colored into imaginary outline
color over and past these invisible white shapes w a darker crayon. The white crayon will resist the darker crayon just enough to show the white coloring as different from the color area

Final drawings:
1) draw the scene w. two crayons, (one a dark crayon). Use a dark crayon to capture negative shapes and large areas.
2) do a continuous line drawing of the scene. Color it,

And here now is my photo that we used as our reference. The building has been beautifully painted since this photo was taken.  Aah but we like the stories that the old paint speaks of. The members of this grange work very hard to raise money to maintain the building.

They hold the best public suppers ever. One of my favorite places, and the few places that hold on to a spirit of Maine and its people that we love so dearly.

October Autumn Themes Adult Art Workshop Series at Rockland Library, 2015

Autumn Themes Free October Adult Art Workshop Series with Catinka Knoth at Rockland Public Library, 2015

Rockland - Catinka Knoth offers drawing October's autumn themes, with a focus on drawing in color, 11 a.m. Mondays, in October, (no class Columbus Day 10/12), in the Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Led by Knoth, participants will create their own colored drawings of apple motifs; fall leaves; autumn landscape scenes; and Halloween pumpkins. Knoth provides the classes free of charge and open to the general public, with materials supplied, and Friends of Rockland Library host. FMI Knoth at 596-0069 or Rockland Library at 594-0310.

Knoth will provide instruction and guidance in drawing October fall themes. Each week is a different subject, as follows:

10/05   Apples and apple trees
10/12   No Class - Library closed, Columbus Day
10/19   Autumn leaves & scenes

October 2015 program of Children's Drawing Classes at Rockland Public Library

Fall and Halloween Themes for Free October Children's Drawing Classes at Rockland Library, 2015

Rockland - Children, and those young at heart, will explore fall and Halloween themes in the ongoing drawing classes led by Catinka Knoth at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. The "Let's Draw Together!" workshops, geared for ages 6 and up, also welcome adults. Library policy requests that children 10 and under have an adult accompany them. Classes meet every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. downstairs in the Friends Community Room.

October's subjects may include: autumn leaves and trees; pumpkin patches and scarecrows; owls, bats, and cats; haunted houses; and a spooky Halloween with Jack-O-Lanterns, witches, goblins, and more.

The workshops, sponsored by local patrons Wendy and Keith Wellin, and hosted by Friends of Rockland Library, are free and open to the public, with all materials provided. Participants draw along with Knoth's demonstrations. She expects students to be able to work independently for the most part. Knoth, a Rockland artist, is known for her watercolors of Maine scenes and animal drawings. Her work may be seen at www.catinkacards.com. Floral coastal scenes inventions - beach roses, poppies, lupine, wildflowers with daisies.

These four floral coastal scene inventions make up a quartet of notecards, (and prints). The wildflower cove was last in the series. While setting up images into digital layouts for printable download pdf's, I noticed - here is a group of inventions of three kinds of flowers. I will have to do another flower to complete the series. These were not intended as a series. Just the result of my coastal floral scene lessons this year and the past, though the lessons/classes are a series. The last, "Wildflower Cove Invention", started out as daisies but turned into a bit more diverse, if vague, wildflower patch. Imagined cornflowers/flax/asters, (whatever those blue flowers that we see towards summer's end are), and goldenrod fill this field.

These were all painted on card stock, (8.5" x 11"), rather than 'real' watercolor paper. The right brand of card stock takes paint nicely and is plentiful. It is very freeing in painting to know there is plenty of paper on hand. Ideally one would be so practiced and proficient and confident that one would not worry about freezing up when setting the brush to real rag watercolor paper.

There is no underdrawing in these paintings. They are all painted directly and made up in the moment. Maine coastal views are quite similar in general structure.

An example of what was showing on my twitter feed a little while ago - here to illustrate the resources available with twitter. 

We had been speaking of the new Google logo/font - why some like it and others don't. Twitter is an example of what some consider too goofy a name, and therefore won't use it. Too bad because it can be so useful.

"I actually love twitter, but it was not reliably accessible with the straight talk phone i was using. And It does not make sense for computers and other substantial machines. But it is great for following news, weather, fast breaking ongoing stories, and great article leads. It depends on whom one follows. One can follow good news outlets. Local people did not use it much a few years ago. That may have changed. ... But there are a lot of people who write it off because of the name. They never get as far as finding out the benefits of twitter." - CK

Wildflower invention coastal scene, smaller image

Wildflower inventions - very quickie watercolor to act as the fourth in a series of coastal floral scene inventions.

Looks like only email uploads work here. Any other method drops the connection to the server too quickly for the image to complete the upload, with this dial-up connection.

This watercolor invention of the beach roses coastal Maine scene, includes the title. I wondered why there were two scans of the same painting.

Daisies at Marshall Point Light, many more than were actually there.

A continuous line quickie pencil sketch of the scene, from my photo, Marshall Point light in Port Clyde, Maine. Painted quickly with watercolor over the sketch. This may seem more like a daisy carpet!

Rockland breakwater and Friendship sloop, 2012, watercolor. Painted in arbitrary color scheme, an interpretation of a pleine-aire sketch from the Friendship sloop races in 2000 (I think). Drawing the races as they take place means one must sketch very fast - the boats are racing in the wind. I painted the sketches later at home - just a matter of coloring in. My camera back then was an Instamatic and would not pick up any good detail at that distance. I did not even try to use it. I still lack decent sailing photos! Always good to make do with one's imagination. Look at the color schemes that can result, twelve years later. This has now become a regular lesson for my classes. Part of the lesson  usually is to come up with a very arbitrary color scheme.

This image disappeared on the previous upload - lost in the ether, or cyberspace! Better luck this time perhaps. It is an imaginary Maine coastal scene of beach roses in the foreground, with a red lobsterboat in that blue blue sea. This is painted in direct freehand - no underdrawing. Hope it uploads in proper landscape orientation! Starting upload at 5:12 pm (to my online email service). We'll see how long it takes to upload. The file is 2.6 mb, and this is a dial-up connection. This dial-up service in the past year has been doing everything at a slower than snail's pace. I believe they have long ago throttled down how much data they allow over these simplest of data lines.
