We started with exercises attempting to draw only the black features of jack-o-lanterns. The object is to try for fierce or scary expressions. It is really hard. We usually end up with nice friendly faces. But it is always good to try.
We then practiced a series of pumpkins in conceptual or archetypal form. Schematic is the word!
I drew a black cat silhouette also as a quick follow along model.
Then the class drew their own pumpkin Halloween scenes. In one here, instead of a blue moon, we have a blue pumpkin.
Kids’ class drew haunted house scenes with more Halloween motifs. They did some monsters as well.
This one is all ready to be a coloring page!

Spinning Color wheel in a folding card experiment.
Color wheel in a card. Trying to make a paper wheel that can spin, inside a folding card. I have been searching for instructions for how to make one. What paper mechanism one needs to make. I have found nothing so far. This is my first attempt. Very crude. I want it to spin fast enough that the colors disappear.

Autumn leaves crayon rubbings and paper cuts. Adult art class student display, 10/21/19
What fun to make our own leaves!
Color a paper in a riot of colors and ways.
Cut out several general leaf shapes from another paper. Try freehand cutting. Keep the background piece too.
Attach this background cutaway sheet to the colored sheet. You can make a black sheet too for this!
With the leaf papercuts make an arrangement on a blank sheet. Trace around the arrangement.
Place a clean sheet on the arrangement and make a crayon rubbing.
Color your tracing page as you want.
Make a list of some more ideas and variations for this.
You can also use real leaves, as you see here
The leaf shapes are also like trees in a scene themselves.

Cat and Pig have fun decorating cakes, digital phone drawings, 10/10/19
Cat and Pig might use buttercream, fondant, meringue, or royal icing to decorate a cake. They draw with icing in a paper cone tube. They don’t know what kind of cake they are decorating. What kind of cake is this?

Scarecrows and pumpkin patches, apples and apple trees, - student art displays, kids’ and adults’ drawing classes, 10/7-8/19
In kids class we went through a long list of guessing what the day’s topic was to be. Finally someone guessed pumpkins. That was only part of it! The scarecrow blows in the wind and though he jangles with pie pans and cans, he does not fool the crows. The sit on his head and arms, and find some corn. And his hat looks like the sunrise or sunset.
Adult class did apples and Apple trees. Apples are always a good subject for practicing spheres. We did exercises for this in pencil and practiced how a light source affects a sphere. Students worked from my reference photos after we had practiced from my schematic demos.
The whole thing is a cycle / round and round and rushing along. We may think we are just ourselves but it is all of us, our selves, that make the whole thing happen. It must be a balance of predictable to unpredictable or there would be no point to going through with it.

Fall leaves and scenes - children’s drawing class display, 10/01/19
Without real leaves we drew some make be'leaf's. Then made freehand leaf cutouts for a crayon rubbing drawing. We also used the cutouts to trace and color.
