September adult art workshops with Catinka Knoth at Rockland Library, 2018

Knoth Teaches "Scenes of September in Maine" Adult Art Workshops, at
Rockland Library, 2018

Rockland - Catinka Knoth  will  teach drawing  "Scenes of September in
Maine", with a focus on buildings, at 11 a.m.  Mondays,  Rockland Public
Library, the Community Room, 80 Union St.  Led by Knoth, participants
will make their own  drawings in color, using colored pencils and crayons. Knoth offers the  adult workshops
free and  open to the general public, with materials supplied. The Friends
of Rockland Library host. FMI Knoth at 691-5544 or Rockland Library at
594-0310.

Knoth will lead students in drawing several scenes of iconic local
Maine buildings. Students may experience simple aspects of  perspective
theory. They will also practice the technique of coloring in without
using outlines. Familiar buildings from St. George and South Thomaston
along the St. George peninsula and Rte 131 will serve as subjects for the
classes. Each week is a different building - a one room schoolhouse, a barn, and a grange.

September Harvests a Theme for Children's Drawing Classes at Rockland Library, 2018

Rockland - Children, and those young at heart, will explore farming, harvest, and seasonal themes in this September's ongoing drawing classes led by Catinka Knoth at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. The "Let's Draw Together!" sessions, geared for ages six and up, also welcome adults. The library requests that children age ten and under have an adult accompany them. Classes meet every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. in the Friends Community Room. FMI - Jean Young, children's librarian, 594-0310.

September subjects include butterflies and Monarch butterfly migration; farm scenes of haying and the fall harvest; farm animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, roosters, geese, and ducks; visits to the apple orchard and apple picking; and September gardens. Each week is a different subject.

Class had some messing around with torn paper triangles and coloring the background as warm up drawing - a form of using negative shapes.

Final drawings students used one of my paintings for reference. They were to do a continuous line drawing first, then color as desired.

All instructions give rise to choices or decisions to make. I can often be hopelessly vague, since I have rarely figured out the exact steps. None of us ever knows just how something 'should' be done. Every choice leads to an experience or learning. The so called 'wrong' answer or choice can so often lead to other possibilities. There is always such a richness of possibility. One always dances a line between a known result and a surprise result.

"Let's Draw Up a Collection of August Maine Memories!" Children's
Drawing Workshops at Rockland Public Library, 2018

Rockland - Children will continue exploring Maine memories this summer
at the weekly drawing classes led by Catinka Knoth at Rockland Public
Library. Knoth leads children, (and adults), ages 6 and up, in
follow-along drawings on a variety of motifs. Children age 10 and under
should be accompanied by an adult.

Wendy and Keith Wellin sponsor the workshops, which are free and open
to the public with all materials provided. Classes meet every Tuesday,
4-5 pm, Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St., hosted
by the Friends of Rockland Library. FMI - Jean Young, children's

August themes will include subjects such as: Maine lighthouses and
boats, Maine farms with blueberry farming and belted galloways; Maine birds such as puffins, eagles, ospreys, chickadees;
and, a Maine country fair. Each week is a different theme.

Knoth Offers Free "Maine Lighthouses and Boats" Adult Art Workshop
Series in August at Rockland Library, 2018

Rockland - Catinka Knoth will teach drawing Midcoast Maine lighthouse
and boat scenes, Mondays in August at 11 am. in the Community Room,
Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Led by Knoth, participants make
their own lighthouse and boat drawings using colored pencils and
crayons. Each week is a different scene:

8/13 Rockland Breakwater
8/20 Sailboats by Rockland Breakwater
8/27 Lobsterboat heads home by Marshall Pt.


Knoth offers the workshops free of charge with materials supplied.
The workshops are hosted by Friends of Rockland Library and open to the

Participants will learn in the first session how to make a drawing of
Marshall Point Light. Knoth will show how to depict the white forms of
the tower, the pylons, and the walkway, by making the "negative"
shapes of the deep blue sea that shows behind these objects. The dark
turret and cap of the building will appear with the use of minimal
strokes. Broad swaths of crayon marks and accent strokes will suggest
the rocky shoreline. The dark green of Hupper's Island in the
background provides further negative shapes to define the walkway.
This is a subject that needs no preliminary line drawing.

Maine farming - belted Galloway cows and blueberry picking, kids' art class, group display, 8/14/18

The kids and the adults followed along with my drawing demo. They start with a border or frame. We put in some marks or decorations. It's a great way to warm up.

Then we went into the scene, drawing a cow. One child observed that the cow body we started with looked like 3 moons, (crescents). I hope I remember that next time. These are supposed to be belted Galloway cows. Some people call them Oreo cookie cows. They are black but marked with a broad band of white around the middle.

Then we drew a set of big ears on either side of the top of the head. Yes, it looked a bit like a cow-pig, as one child said! My cow then got a set of big eyelashes. I always think of cows as having big eyelashes. Long triangles for legs with the grass they stand in. Hay coming out of the mouth like a set of whiskers.

I asked for some words to write for viewing or possible spelling needs. A very young child who can write some letters already, suggested the shortest of words - in, it, is, at. I think perhaps the child had learned how to write these already. And then came a bunch of techy electronics words. Oh I could hardly spell these. And I drew the line at DVD. We barely had room for the more narrative words. Purple, blueberries, elephant, rainbow. No one used any in their drawings that I know of. I find they do like to have a word of their choice up for all to see with everyone else's.

One grown up told that they grow blueberries and theirs are done already, because of when we had the heat. Blueberries flower in May and because they are small cup shaped drooping flowers, the bees have a hard time getting in there and pollinating. And, blueberries come in blues and pinks. Blues are sweeter because in their darkness they soak up more sun, which makes them develop the sugars more. Note the blueberry flower drawing this participant so kindly drew for us.

The Union Fair starts 8/18. It is a country fair in Union Maine in celebration of blueberry farming. Our last August  topic is 'A visit to a country fair'. (Next week is Maine birds.)

Rockland Breakwater - adult art class, 8/13/18, student group display, and exercises

We started by practicing block drawings in dark crayons, without using outlines. We alternated between boxes and that old 'weight' symbol. The hope is that one gets to feel the difference between sloping planes of a form and perpendicular planes of a box . We added flaps, triangle blocks, and/or roofs to some of our blocks. One of them we turned into a birdhouse.

As reference for the final drawing, we used an outline digital conversion of my watercolor that I'd done from my reference photo of the Breakwater.
Class only had the line drawing to work from for their final drawing. Most of them drew in line and then colored in.

I tried drawing with black crayon in the same manner as the exercises but using that line conversion as my reference. I know the photo and the painting pattern well enough that I was able to do it, somewhat.

Maine lighthouse and boats, kids' drawing class, 8/7/18

Class visitors had a connection to Owls Head Light, so we tried a follow-along drawing for that. We also drew a skiff, and a Friendship Sloop sailboat.

Questions to ask people at a smallish luncheon gathering, ideas

A friend invited a small group over for a porch party. I 'armed' myself by making a list of questions I could ask people, or might ask if I were doing a podcast interview. (That is something  I may try one day.) I don't think I got to ask any of these questions. People had plenty of things they wanted to tell each other, or that they just asked each other. Still, I liked that I had my list tucked away. I want to write it up on little question cards too. The wordings in these ideas is not that fluid - more in note form. Later I sent this list to my friend, since I had told her of it but had not been able to find it then. And I included a little digital drawing of this porch party.

World Lion Day 8/10/18

I just saw that it is supposedly World Lion Day today, except I heard it a couple days late! Here are a few from a long time ago. The papercuts I cut freehand - used the scissors to draw with! I did the line drawing as a large demo, using compressed charcoal.

You can see the exercises here that we started with. A row of colored in rectangles with no initial outlining. Triangles the same. A row of hats. A row of ski caps! Then triangles that get progressively longer on their right side. Class had few reference pictures to share from. I did the demo from memory, hoping it would basically hit the marks. ...There is a graphic visual appeal working in this conceptual manner.

I have since found the reference photo among my Walmart photos. Now you can take your time drawing this as you wish!

Maine lighthouses, student art display, (children and adults), kids' drawing class, 7/31/18

We did simplified interpretations of Marshall Point & Owls Head lights.

A family who have been visiting the classes from the very beginning on their yearly trips to Maine, returned yesterday. The same thing happened in the adult class the previous day. These youngsters had come to the first classes around age 4. What a miracle of life to get to see them as almost grown. What magic!

And we had a new 4 year old visitor!

I had been encouraging a friend that it was a lot easier to get one's self exercising if one could make it fun somehow. I suggested making a list of such possibilities. A week or so later, no, no list... ok, so I want to see if I can come up with such a list. Yes, and here it is. I need a list of small rewards too now!

• Brainstorm big list – 10 kinds
• Write on chips or slips
• Random pick three
• Do - one minute each – how many weeks for this game before increasing the ante with the times?
• Track daily and exercise log or some kind of journal/study record. 
• Spreadsheet and form for tracking
• Put together music playlist to do exercise to

• Collect exercise or dance videos to move to. Aways keep a log
• Make graphed images to fill in color blocks as you complete
