Happy Halloween! Crayon drawing to color!

Autumn walk around my block, Saturday, 10/28/17 - squirrel, acorns, leaves, little buddy....

(Dictated - so lots of doozies and just a few edits!...)

Afternoon walk something I haven't done in ages I somewhat  went out with out any real agenda. Maybe I would find something's to bring home maybe I would remember somethings it was justto start myself giving out there for a walk. Right off the bat a squirrel seem to be hollering at me yeah that's right I was poking around at the acorns I was finding on the ground and then I heard the squirrel . I did wonder if he was cock hollering about me or about something else I tried to get pictures of him I hadn't realized how hard it would be to use the iPhone for pictures on a walk because there's so much potential for dropping it it doesn't have strep hanger. And doesn't like cold fingers when you're trying to take a picture. So I kept finding things on the ground it up in the tree with the squirrel I turned the corner. And there was a beautiful red Maple leaf on the ground. So again I had to stop and take a picture of that leaf and then Who? comes along my cat! He had found me on my walk! It wasn't that good about posing for the camera though because he was nervous about the Broadway noise and also the work being done at the first building on the other side street. That's right I had stopped and asked the workmen what they were building. They were making a kitchen bigger or something like that. OK cat kept following me - we went through the parking lot behind the old schools oh and the first thing is I saw as we turn the corner was patches of dandelion greens new ones! So I had to pull one out a big handful of one out because it look like it would be can make good sautéed greens. And that wasn't going to be able to stuff in my pocket I was going to have to hold onto that until I got home. I took pictures of the drying out Angel what are they called cats . Period. Period… at the end of the parking lot is a small oak tree with more not red but a nice color leaves and those were still on the tree as I had remembered they were a few winters past - I took some pictures of them. And then that driveway that comes down into the parking lot was quite filled with the luggage puddle. There was room to walk along it but it was still in it had wonderful reflections in it so I took pictures of the reflections.

Before I could take the picture though I heard a car behind me and the driver did not want to get in the way of my picture and was prepared to wait for me I told her just go ahead because otherwise I'll be rushed OK so she went through the puddle

 and the puddle rippled up, but quickly enough was smooth. I wanted to get a picture of the school building as it reflected in the puddle. I got that. All along I could hear crows in the distance calling each other as they often do at that hour right before the sun sets. Cat kept coming along being a little bit edgy with whenever you heard sounds that worried him and he was always on the lookout of course as we got closer to Broadway there were sirens and several ambulances went by. Will have to find out where that was. On Broadway the busy street at the traffic zooming by the cat was not happy he even yelled in distress when we got to our house you went across the lawn to get to safety – our porch rather than go going to the back, and he came I didn't with me. I had intentions of writing this perhaps in pencil into my notebook that I did this with a few years back, but I couldn't find it that's enough I've no idea where I put that. So I'm just dictating whatever I remember of my little Jonte. It is really fun to take a walk to see what you will see, to see what you can remember to know things on the way. I also got ideas for their is missions that you can set for yourself I'm such a walk– I'll make a list of some ideas later. I also had the idea that I could do some sketches or drawings of this stuff that I brought back with me no old equals a couple of C wings what are they call those helicopter things the very skinny lobed Oakleaf that I found. My wad of dandelion greens is at least sitting in some water. Later I'll figure out how to clean it. Earlier I was looking forThe name of that plant that I saw her simple queen in place of a burger that one. Queen Anne's lace the plant thank you! Lots of this writing won't make as much sense as I would like it too because it's dictation I did a few corrections long way but there's some doozies in there. I leave them for their humor.

Owl n Cat n Bat, step-by-step drawing 10/24/17

This started as a video recording, but my 4 month old phone is already out of storage space. (At least I assume that is why the video stopped recording and refused further efforts. It let me take pics tho! ) And after all that hype by Apple about using iCloud for extra storage - it turns out that no, you can't really use it. It will just keep resynching to yr phone. It simply is not an archive system. It is useless. I will have a lot of uploading to my Google drive to catch up. You really need to watch out for the lingo these companies bandy about....

Woodland Animals and November Themes Adult Art Workshop Series with
Catinka Knoth at Rockland Public Library, 2017

Rockland - Catinka Knoth will teach drawing woodland animals and themes
of November, with a focus on drawing in color, 11 a.m. Mondays, in the Community Room, Rockland Public Library,
80 Union St. Knoth leads participants in working with colored pencils
and crayons to create their own colored drawings of woodland animals and
November themes. Students will use a variety of exercises and methods to
help develop new ways of seeing, observing, and designing. Knoth
provides the classes free of charge and open to the general public, with
materials supplied; Friends of Rockland Library host. FMI Knoth at
691-5544,or Rockland Library at 594-0310.

Knoth will give instruction and guidance in drawing November's themes.
Each week is a different subject, as follows:

Press Release - Themes for November Children's Drawing Classes at Rockland Library, 2017

Rockland -  "Let's Draw in Celebration of Native American Heritage

Month, Thanksgiving, and the Coming of Winter!" is the November program

for the ongoing free drawing classes led by Catinka Knoth at Rockland

Public Library. Children will explore such motifs as woodland animals; Thanksgiving;

Native American designs, lodging, hunting, and game; and foods and

family gatherings.  Knoth leads children age 6 and up in these "follow

along" sessions every Tuesday, 4-5 pm, in the library's Community Room,

80 Union Street. Children 10 and under should be accompanied by an

adult. Knoth expects participants to be able to work independently and

encourages adults to join in the drawing fun.  Local patrons Wendy and

Keith Wellin sponsor the program, which is free with all materials

supplied, and hosted by Friends of Rockland Library. Contact Jean

Fall autumn scenes, exercises, adult art class display, 10/23/17

We started with some exercises turning a circle into a sphere in the simplest manner possible. If you can draw a line that feels as if it's encircling a sphere, that line gives you an idea for how to add shadowing. That shadowing is only there to give form, to insinuate form.

We also did an exercise of using negative spaces to create the tree trunks of birch trees. If you color in the background, adding texture to it, then you can add those little dark details of birchbark to the trunks. Keep the marks light or they will sit too far forward of the trunks - everything has to be in relationship to each other.

English muffin, flatbread, no knead sourdough flatbread, stovetop frypan oven

I made two of these. This one cooked after I had eaten the previous one. These are experiments. A while back I saw a video, I don't know how I found it, of someone making no-knead bread - it was sourdough bread. I don't think I wrote anything down. But I got enough out of it that I wanted to try something like this. I wasn't ready to fire up the big oven yet. So I've been wondering if I could possibly make this on the stovetop for just a small serving. When I went back to find the recipe I had first seen, there was a subscription wall. So I had to find a different sourdough recipe. I found Mark Finley I think it was, his video. So I got wondering if I could try this on a small scale - oh I forgot – I had already started my dough and it had been sitting out all afternoon, and I had just put it in the fridge to sit overnight. But this guy Finley, said the dough should stay at room temperature - I think that's what he said. So I hauled mine out of the fridge... One of the things about making no-knead bread with a good crust is that it needs to be baked at very high temperature for a while. And that is not going to be able to be done on the stovetop. The other thing with no-knead and sourdough is that you use very little yeast to begin with - the yeast grows as it rises over a long period of time. My little bread experiment here is again made without a real recipe. I used eight heaping teaspoons, (cutlery teaspoons), of all purpose white flour. A pinch of salt, a bigger pinch of sugar, and a pinch of dry active yeast. These dry ingredients get mixed together in just a little bowl /container, or whatever. In a separate cup I put some almost boiling water. Then, teaspoon-by-teaspoon, I add it a little at a time to the dry. Stir a little and keep adding. In this case I used 18 ,(cutlery) teaspoons of hot water, hoping that the water would not be too hot just by having gone through that action. I know the feel of when there's enough water in. And you can't mix it completely - you just have to mix it through very quickly and then go for more water. If you go to thoroughly it's too hard to add more if it needs more. So by feel I knew I had done adding water. Then I covered the whole thing with the tinfoil tent and let it sit. I peeked occasionally to see what was going on. I'm not sure if I was allowed to or not. I gave it a few stirs every once in a while. This morning I cut the batter/dough in half. Since I did not have bran flakes or cornmeal, I used oatmeal. I sprinkle the oatmeal flakes onto a piece of tinfoil. Scoop this 1/2 of batter onto the tinfoil with the oatmeal. Flatten it out a little bit. Set this into an aluminum pie plate, cover it with an aluminum pie plate. Set this contraption inside the cast-iron frying pan, which has been pre-heating on the stove top, cover the whole thing with the pan cover and let it cook, or shall we say bake. This will not brown in these baking conditions. With the first muffin though I turned it over halfway through, so the peak of that one actually did brown. But the next incarnation of batter did not brown at all. I didn't turn it over I just let it 'bake' as it was. I think I sliced in half with a long serrated knife shortly after I took it off the heat. I took photos of it the way it looked when it came out. The way it looked once sliced, and the final picture, with cheddar cheese on top. I like the inside texture - it's got air holes - yay! It just lacks a good crust. Well actually it has the crust, but it's not a brown crust. And it's a thinnish bread - it's about a half an inch thick.

Kids' class followed along with my demo drawings. We tried maple, oak, and simple leaf shape. We cut out the first set of drawings and used them for crayon rubbings.
