Lobsterboats & sailboats, Rockland Breakwater & Marshall Pt. lighthouses, and Maine farming! - student, (adults and kids), drawings. Art classes, 8/15/16 & 8/22/16
Mixing the classes in this posting. The adult class art displays also show some of the exercises we did. The exercises serve as warm ups and as practice in observing or thinking of a subject or visual aspect in a different manner than we are accustomed to.
Today's class, 8/22/16, was the lobsterboat going home past Marshall Point Light. Big rebellion in the ranks because the boat in the reference material was so small as to even see it was a lobsterboat! The problem is that unless the boat is a huge boat, it will show small behind a whole view of the lighthouse. But see here how we did it this time!! Yes, but that is not really a lobsterboat. It is a much bigger boat, the mail and ferryboat, Laura B. We managed to rustle up some copies of my photo of the Laura B. heading home past the lighthouse.

Rockland Breakwater - student drawings, adult art class, 8/8/16
Exercises coloring in cube like forms without existing outlines, bottom row. We tried good cubes and skewed cubes to get a feel for the differences. When you are used to thinking of a thing one way all your life, it is very hard to even perceive a different way, let alone try to replicate it. I don't give actual 'how to do perspective' lessons. That becomes a hopeless muddle of confusion.
We worked from this reference photo after we did the practices. I did a follow along demo and probably led everyone astray.
It could be helpful to also see the work of John Marin and Eric Hopkins.

Marshall Point Lighthouse - student drawings and exercises, adult art class 8/1/16
Exercises along the bottom two rows, final drawings on the top.
Draw the pork pie hat or top hat without outlines.
Draw the beanie hat.
Find the bowtie in the picture it's between the beanie hat and the pork pie hat.
Practice long triangles without outlines. They should be shorter on one side and longer on the right.
Fill-in upside down triangles between the right side up triangles.
