Mild mid-afternoon walk - memory sketches and notes, photos, 1/29/16
testing post by email vs. post from blogger dashboard. Pic upload sometimes  works better by my private email serverl. This will be a back-up post or repost. Right now the blogger pic upload is just hanging again. Two pics got uploaded to the blogger editor but they are taking forever to insert to the draft. Meanwhile this online email editor has uploaded 3 pics and is uploading another.pic #4 uploaded here...
blogger is still hung up...7:12 pm (started this dual upload process c. 57 min ago...
pic#5 is up 7:15 p, blogger hanging..
pic#6 up
pic #7 up @ 7:22p nothing happening at blogger - still hanging.
Another question - what order will pics post in. I want the sketch book posts to be first or last, but in their order of writing. I got mixed up w the order of the walk photos. Do they post in order of upload or order of file names?

Answer - with my private online email editor, the pics post in order of upload. So here you see the sketchbook entries, then the last pic - my return home, then the starting out photo, etc.

Winter walk around half a block - the cat joins me, Thurs. 1/21/16

The cat left the house the same time I did to go off on his own as usual. Late afternoon, just before the sun would be setting. It was glorious brilliant cold and still windy day. I had worried over whether I would be ok without a windbreaking coat. Would the several layers of sweaters, scarves and hat be warm enough? My intention was to just walk around the corner as the last time, then return the same way. I took some photos of animal tracks across the snowy lawns, and the condition of the so-called cleared sidewalk. Turned the corner and headed east, down the hill. That blocked the wind a bit.

And then out from between the two houses on the south side, bounded my cat into the middle of the road to greet me. He wandered off to a house on the other side of the road. I assumed he was off to see what was going on around the brook at the corner. I continued on my way. Looked back and saw the cat was coming along with me. I would have to cut thru the upcoming parking lot rather than going back up to the main road as I did not want to have worry about the cat following me along the main road.

In the parking lot, a fellow in an SUV stopped to tell me that a cat was following me. Yes I know... and I told him a bit about the cat.

Maybe the cat would cut home on his own when we reached a spot directly behind our house. No, he kept coming with me.

We would have to get back to the main road eventually. That means a return to traffic and the wind. At least it was only a few houses to walk past. Again I thought the cat might have gone off on his own to make his own way home. But in front of the house I caught sight of  the cat jumping into the bushes in front of the house. I could barely see him in there and tried to catch a photo of him.

He beat me to the house and waited for me at the foot of the porch steps. On the porch he seemed a bit reluctant to come in. He had hardly been out very long for his usual time outside. I brought him in anyway, rather than having to worry about getting him in later.

Home upstairs and wrote up the account of my walk in the notebook, did  my  sketches  from memory  referring to the photos.

Soon after, crows were flocking west over the house to a tree on the other side of the road. They took off again heading overhead back to the east to roost in another tree.

Evening walk around the corner - recall and note ten observations, 1/17/16

Evening walk around the corner,  1/17/16 c. 5:20 pm
temp c. 26 deg F. (?)
Mission - feel the invigorating cold on my face. Recall and list 10 observations once returned.

Photos, the walk, notes from memory, memory sketch

I almost did not take the camera but remembered it had a nighttime setting. The setting says to use a tripod. No tripod. One pic does look blurry. The others so far don't seem too blurry - but it is night so they are just impressions. I think I meant to use the camera just as a timekeeper!

I am only going thru this routine for a little while. It is much more complicated and detailed than intended. For now it's purpose is to get me out of the house and outdoors, and to try to take advantage somewhat of what winter is about here in Maine - the cold.

Some Food Explorations & Inventions - January 2016 CK 1/16/16... uploading by email, but online email is not letting me enter my text into the body!

Some Food Explorations - January 2016  CK 1/16/16
(This blog post is repeated on my other blog CK Notes)
Cheddar Cheese English Muffin Crostini and  Mini Blueberry Stovetop Cake

Almost every morning I have bread and cheese for breakfast. Usually it is english muffin toasted on the stove top in my cast iron fry pan. Toast the inside, then turn over and lay cheddar cheese on top to melt while the other sides toast. I usually call this open face grill cheese. But it should be toasted, not grilled with fat in the pan. There is plenty of fat in the cheese already…good also with dollops of salsa, or sliced tomatoes, or sliced avocado.

Recently I have been cutting this into 4 wedges/quarters before  eating. Something special about wedge/pie shapes.

It took me all this time to think of cutting into lots of little pie slices. Six slices became eight, became ten (per side).

And now we have here a Sun. I think these are also called crostini - not sure tho. So, what are Tostini?

I wanted something else to round out this story. So here also is a mini blueberry cake experiment/invention. It was going to be more of a shortbread cookie with a fresh blueberry topping. But the butter/sugar/flour ratio did not look like it would make a cookie. Quick, add some baking powder, (before putting liquid to the dry mixture), and turn it into a cake.

You can see the approximate recipe written out on the card. I rarely use real measurements, but cook by eyeball and feel. If it turns out pretty well, I try to write up notes on the approximate recipe, to the best of my memory.
