Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse watercolor 2014

Direct freehand watercolor, from my old photo taken with old Instamatic during a ferry ride to North Haven island, Maine. Finally scanned the painting! It is about the only photo of my own and the only photo I use for the art classes etc. This posting is a workaround to get the image into my google docs etc so that I can set up a digital notecard with it!

And here it is uploaded to my page on FineArtAmerica. They do prints and all sorts of products from artists' art. Just imagine - duvet covers, pillows, shower curtains, teeshirts, tote bags, and phone covers! Yes, I get to add my mark-up.

Marshall Pt. Lighthouse and lobster boats

My reference photos from 2011. We used these in the lesson, "Lobster boats by Marshall Pt Light", adult art class, 8/24/15. Incuded is a whiteboard tracing of a photo projection, and a quickie direct painting from several years ago.

Lesson:
Exercises from the tracing:
1) Continuous line drawing, using a light color. Color in all the white with one dark color.
2) Recreate #1 by coloring in the darks and leaving white lines. No outlining!

Final drawing: draw and color as you wish.

Sailing past Rockland Breakwater lighthouse, crayon drawing and exercises, adult art class 8/17/15

Lesson:

Sailing past the Rockland Breakwater

Exercises: tear triangles from a quarter sheet of paper. Position triangles in first window. Trace around triangles. Color in the background with a dark crayon. Recreate that dark background in next window by coloring in without outlining. New triangle arrangement in window 3, but go right to coloring in the background. Again, recreate this in window 4.

Final drawing: Continuous line drawing of the scene - use a dark crayon and make sure to start by drawing a border around your paper. Pull out the yellows and oranges from your crayon box. Blindly choose one crayon from this pool of yellows and oranges. Pool the greens. Blindly choose from the greens. Pool all colors back together. Blindly select your third color. Color your drawing using just those three chosen colors. Color as far away form normal coloration as you can.

At last, if you wish, do a continuous line drawing of the scene, and color as you wish!

This series of Friendship Sloop Races paintings started as very quick sketches done during the races, (15 years ago!!). The boats move quickly so it has to be a quick catch. I painted in the sketches at home later. That is all I have as reference pics for sailboats in action, (for which I have permission to use). So we must rely on my very quick drawing. I had no good camera back then with which to get a decent sailing photo. My camera now can't really catch a sailboat in action out that far either

Rockland Breakwater lighthouse - demo drawing in black crayon; student drawings, practices and final work ( on the clock wall); adult art class, 8/10/15

... And my reference photo from a long ago ferry ride!

Rockland Breakwater lighthouse -students' practices and final drawings, adult art class, 8/10/15. And the reference photo, my pic from a ferry trip in 1999? Practices were done by following along with my demo drawing. No real explanation of perspective principles. Just a loose run through of what actual shapes we were seeing and what else they might look like. You might be able to find an example of the very first practice - drawing a skewed cube vs. a normal cube, just by coloring in shapes using invisible outline. Tough habits to break when one is so used to thinking in terms of outlines. Yes, outlines are very important - BUT you also need to practice a feel for areas and imaginary outlines.

The clock wall displays the final drawings, done as desired.

One student is interested in using chalk drawing in his teaching. I told of an old ebook on just that, specifically white chalk on blackboard. This is a wonderful book written long ago and available as a free ebook/download from gutenberg
